Assistant Gallery Manager


The Assistant Gallery Manager will work with the Manager/Director to maintain the overall functioning of the space, organize events, and develop and manage the exhibition and residency program within the Lab. The space is unique in Sydney, and so requires someone happy to respond to the unique requirements of running it. In general these responsibilities will be shared, but applicants should be prepared on rare occasions to extend their involvement in the event the director has travel commitments.

RESPONSIBILITIES (shared with director/manager)

Coordinating the week-to-week running of the space

  • administration of finances, paying fees and utilities
  • purchasing gallery supplies
  • cleaning the gallery
  • staffing gallery hours and managing gallery volunteers
  • managing the database with contacts

Exhibition logistics

  • food and drink purchase for openings
  • assisting curator with gathering images, statements, etc for exhibits
  • hitting marketing, installation, preparation deadlines
  • ordering vinyl, posters and postcards, etc
  • tracking gallery attendance
  • handling sales and commission
  • documentation of shows and activities


  • coordinating airport transport for artists
  • providing information and induction for space
  • local point-of-contact

Event, exhibition, and workshop promotion

  • creating and administering (ticketed) event listings
  • drafting press releases and compiling regular email newsletter
  • developing promotional material for Lab activities (exhibitions, workshops, etc) and marketing events via social media
  • building newsletter / mailing list subscriptions

Developing the activities of the Lab

  • researching new artists and topics for forthcoming exhibitions
  • outreach and research around possible activities and events, presentations

Social media and web site maintenance

  • maintaining the master calendar
  • fielding general enquiries



  • Demonstrable and informed passion in contemporary digital media art, technology, and visual culture
  • Flexibility with working hours (available for 10-20 hours per week)
  • Ability to be quick-witted, pre-emptive and responsive
  • Ability to work well within a small team
  • Demonstrated initiative, planning, organisation and time-management skills
  • Understanding of social media marketing channels and strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent staff management skills


  • Knowledge of public and private, national and international exhibition spaces
  • Technical skills and experience managing exhibitions
  • Excellent IT skills and ability to troubleshoot computer and communications equipment
  • Video, image, and print editing competency
  • Experience of financial management


The position of Assistant Gallery Manager is located at:

Tactical Space Lab, 4 Lackey St, St Peters, NSW, 2044.
(5 minutes walk from St Peters station, 10 minutes bus from Newtown station)


Approximately 10-20 hours per week. Some weekend work and attendance at openings and other nominated functions is also required.
